There has been some gossip lately which has been passed around certain Mantis newsgroups and listings. Because of this, we have had a direct response back from Lee Kam Wing Martial Arts Sports Association
Subject: History and Relationship between the late Grandmaster Lo Kwan Yu and Grandmaster Chiu Chi Man Firstly, yes there are pictures of the Late Grandmaster Lo Kwan Yu and Grandmaster Chiu Chi Man, I have seen them hanging on the walls of Grandmaster Chiu Chi Man's home here in Hong Kong. I have studied them closely on my numerous visits to Mr Grandmaster's home with my Sifu, Master Lee Kam Wing, and I can clearly state for the record that they are all original, as is the one in my Sifu's book. (They are NOT PHONIES) The former student of my Sifu's who was expelled, is Kai Uwe Pel, not only was he expelled from my Sifu's association but he was also expelled from the Hong Kong Chin Wu Athletic Association and the Hong Kong Chinese Martial Arts Association, FOREVER. The reasons: he has abused my Sifu's trust, he betrayed our style and family by changing the name of our style, moreover he changed the forms. He is arrogant towards his peers, and students alike. His is spreading lies about my Sifu and Grandmaster Chiu Chi Man, the above associations have expelled him for his treacherous, deceitful and dishonourable behaviour. Master Lee Kam Wing has been my Sifu for many many years and I have seen him give Kai Uwe Pel many opportunities to change his behaviour. But instead of getting better, his behaviour eventually became intolerable for my Sifu and the Hong Kong Chinese Martial Arts and HK Chin Wu Associations alike. So they all expelled him. Kai Uwe Pel is not a Worldwide Chief Instructor of Mantis Kung Fu. The Hong Kong Chin Wu did not appoint him as Worldwide Head Trainer nor has any other Chinese Martial Arts Association given him such an appointment. He has been expelled from all Hong Kong Martial Arts Associations, also he is not a Master in the Singapore Chin Wu Association, he is merely a STUDENT. He is a very deceitful and unloyal student. A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE RELATIONSHIP
BETWEEN THE LATE GRANDMASTER LO KWAN YU When the late Grandmaster Lo Kwan Yu came to Hong Kong in 1930, Grandmaster Chiu Chi Man was already a member of the Hong Kong Chin Wu Athletic Association. The Late Grandmaster Lo Kwan Yu was appointed to the Hong Kong Chin Wu by the Shanghai Chin Wu to teach the Seven Star Praying Mantis system of Kung Fu. It was at this time that Grandmaster Chiu Chi Man began his tutelage under the late Grandmaster Lo Kwan Yu In 1933 Grandmaster Chiu Chi Man was appointed as the Martial Arts Supervisor for the Hong Kong Chin Wu Athletic Association. In the same year the Late Grandmaster Lo Kwan Yu himself appointed Grandmaster Chiu Chi Man as the Assistant Instructor in the Seven-Star Praying Mantis System of Kung Fu. Between 1933 and 1938 Grandmaster Chiu Chi Man travelled widely throughout South china and Hong Kong with the Late Grandmaster Lo Kwan Yu for the purpose of demonstrating Seven-Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu. In 1938, the Late Grandmaster Lo Kwan Yu returned to his native Shantung Province, however before leaving Hong Kong he helped Grandmaster Chiu Chi Man and his Kung Fu brothers set up the Man Keung Athletic Association. The Association was legally registered in Phoenix Court, Wan Chai, just before the outbreak of the Second World War. Grandmaster Chiu Chi Man was legally appointed as the Chairman of the Man Keung Athletic Association, whilst the Late Grandmaster Lo Kwan Yu w appointed as the Association's Executive Committee's Chief Instructor. Also before his departure, the Late Grandmaster Lo Kwan Yu entrusted to Grandmaster Chiu Chi Man four books containing all the secrets of the Seven-Star Praying Mantis system The Books consist of :- a) Hand forms b) Weapons forms c) 18 Lor Han Chi Kung forms d) Ancient prescriptions of Herbal medicine Grandmaster Chiu Chi Man would later entrust these same books to Master Lee Kam Wing, his closed door disciple. And on January 9th 1976 a public notice was put in a local Hong Kong newspaper setting a legal declaration, listing the true lineage of Seven-Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu. Starting at the Founder Wong Long and ending with Master Lee Kam Wing in Hong Kong, it also listed other Masters outside of Hong Kong. It also stated that Grandmaster Lo Kwan Yu was 5th Generation Master, Grandmaster Chiu Chi Man is 6th Generation Master and Master Lee Kam Wing is 7th Generation Master. |
According to the statement above there was an article published in a local Hong Kong newspaper on the January 9th 1976. Here is that article (apologies for the poor scan!)
